Happy New Year!

This is just a short message from me (Pastor Jason) as I pray for you and your family to have a blessed new year.  May you enter 2010 expecting the incredible, the impossible made possible by His grace and faithfulness.

This is an important season to reflect on the year that has passed and shift priorities and expectations for the coming one. I hope you are doing just that.  I wrote on Connecting to Impact about taking inventory. I challenge you to go read that and use it as a spiritual exercise (just click here to read it).

Through all the ups and downs, setbacks and triumphs, frustrations and fulfillment--I am certainly glad that God has put us together as a church. I trust that divine wisdom and I know that He will guide us to the most amazing places, accomplishing impossible things.

I was reminded of this passage in Acts 17 and I am so thankful for who He is:
24"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. 25And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. 26From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. 27God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. 28'For in him we live and move and have our being...'

May we each know and understand this more fully in 2010 and all the years ahead.  May you be flooded with revelation from the heart of the Father.  Blessings and grace to you in Jesus' name!

Christ our Savior is born!!

All that we have been planning and preparing for, hoping and dreaming of for the Christmas season is upon us. On tomorrow we will again commemorate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He comes to bring us hope, love, peace and joy. And our prayer is that you and yours will experience all that He is and all He brings as you celebrate.

As you know, many of our church family are vacationing and celebrating outside of the city & state this Christmas season. Added to the list of travellers is the Paddock family (Bill, Liz, Dante', Kaleb and Abigail). We ask that you continue praying & speaking God's best for everyone.

Please be reminded that Pastor Danny Fisher from Seminole, OK will be with us again on this Sunday, Dec 27 at 10:30am. We had a wonderfully blessed time on this past Sunday and look forward to another anointed word of the Lord from our brother. Please invite family & friends to share in what God will do during our Sunday time of worship.

Have a Merry, Merry Christmas and see you on Sunday!!

Merry Christmas and Be Expecting!

Hello everyone,

This is Pastor Jason. We're headed out on our vacation very soon, but on behalf of Andrea, myself, and our family, I wanted to wish you all a very merry Christmas. You are a blessing in the most profound ways to us and we are humbled to be a part of such a beautiful, diverse expression of the Christ's Church.

Enjoy your families and friends this holiday season and also take the necessary moments to recognize His presence in our lives.  Thank Him for His blessings and worship Him.  In everything, be expecting more!

Please remember to come ready to receive these next two weeks as Pastor Danny Fisher from Seminole, OK brings the message.  This is not an accident he's here, but I truly believe it's a divine appointment.  He will bring a timely word that will prepare us for the next season.

If you are in town, do not miss it! Also don't forget to invite as many people as you can to experience what God wants to do.

Prepare your hearts in advance.  Be praying for one another as God puts someone on your heart and mind. Come ready to worship as Sherry leads you in praise to God then trust Him that He has a great word to speak into your life.  It's a new season, a new day, and we have to have a new expectation.

May God's blessings rest upon you and thank you for your love and prayers as we travel. Merry Christmas and as always, we'll be praying for you and your families as well!

All our love,

Jason and Andrea Stasyszen

An Immediate Prayer Request

I just received an email from Meghan that said Andrew Hohenthaner went to the ER this afternoon.  here's what she wrote,
Mom just called me and they are taking dad into the emergency room. I guess he aspirated something into his lungs and they need to run tests and see what is going on (he’s starting to run a fever). Mom is very worried! Please pray for him... he could use all the support he can get.
Thank you all for your prayers and we'll do our best to keep you updated on what's happening.

Blessings,

Jason

Breakthrough Church Christmas Dinner Party

It's time to plan our Christmas dinner party. We have many ideas for you to help make this a wonderful celebration for all of our families.

A Breakthrough Church family dinner party is planned for Sunday evening, December 13 from 5:00-7:00pm at the church. We are also hoping someone in your family will want to sing a song, do a short skit, give a testimony or tell us some jokes. Along with this entertainment, we are also hoping some of you could set up a few tables with games that anyone could play ~ or a puzzle table. You get the picture ~ just family having family time.

This Sunday please see the red poster on the wall where the Operation Christmas Child display has been, for you to signup for food that you plan on sharing with us at the dinner party and there will also be an entertainment signup. This is a two hour long planned party, so please keep your skits, songs, jokes, etc... to a short time so that others will have time to share as well.

With all of that said, let's get all excited with the snow falling and come Sunday ready to sign up for our holiday events. You'll not want to miss this celebration party with our church family!

This event is planned by the Breakthrough family for the Breakthrough family

Last call!

Please have all Operation Christmas Child boxes brought to the church on this Sunday, Nov 22. On the first collection day here in Juneau, the drop off center received 505 boxes. That is so awesome! We, along with many others will add to that number this weekend. Thank you so very much for brightening a child's life. That child will get to hear the wonderful story of our Savior's birth this Christmas because you gave to the Lord. The boxes will need to be transported from our church to the drop off center, Chapel By The Lake, by 3:30pm on this Sunday. I had intended to take care of this, but have a conflict in my schedule. Any volunteers? Let me know asap. God's blessings to you all!

Petition for Parental Notification of Abortion

Hello everybody,
I have a petition for those of you who would like to sign if they are in favor of parents being notified before their daughters can have an abortion. This is a small step but hopefully it will lead to future legislation that will reinstate parental consent prior to an abortion. As it is a person under 18 can’t even have a tooth pulled without parental consent. But an abortion…sure, no problem. You’ll have to excuse sarcasm. I can get pretty worked up over this subject. You are welcome to contact me at home or at work if you would like to meet with me to sign the petition. Or check with me at church, I may have it with me. My numbers are: HM: 789-4193 WK: 790-2901

God bless,
Bill Paddock

December Nursery & Children Church

Hello to you all and Happy Pre-Holiday and Christmas to you all.
Many are traveling in December. I am asking each of you to please sign up for the week you are available to do nursery or children's church for that month.

Please see the Christmas card posted in the nursery and PLEASE help us out by choosing one Sunday that you can minister in Nursery or Children's Church for the month of December.
Your help is always appreciated and needed. Not many are willing to give a Sunday service to minister to the ones Jesus Himself called unto Himself and said "for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
The Christmas card is posted on the nursery bulletin board ready for you to sign up for your Sunday(s) in which you are available. Thanks so very much!

"Helping Families Thrive" series continues

Teaching Children to Be Peacemakers

by Ken Sande Focus on the Family

You can teach your children how to resolve conflicts among themselves or with their friends and other people they know. Imagine how much better life could be for you and them.
Here are 12 key principles that young peacemakers need to learn:
1. Conflict is a slippery slope. Some children try to escape from a conflict, while others try to solve it by going on the attack. Few naturally try to work it out.
Escape Responses: These responses are used to get away from a conflict instead of trying to resolve it. They delay healing.
Denial — Pretending that a conflict does not exist or refusing to do what we can to work it out
Blame Game — Blaming others for the problem, pretending we did nothing wrong, covering up what we did, lying
Run Away — Prolonging the problem by running away from the other person
Attack Responses: These are wrong attempts to win a fight rather than resolve it. They damage a relationship further rather than repairing it.
Put Downs — Attacking others with harsh and cruel words, stirring up anger in others
Gossip — Talking about others behind their backs
Fight — Using physical force to get our way
Work-It-Out Responses: These are the only good ways to respond to a conflict.
Overlook an Offense — Dealing with an offense yourself by simply deciding to forgive a wrong
Talk-It-Out — Going directly to the other person to talk out your disagreements
Get Help — Asking a parent or teacher to help you decide how to handle the conflict you are involved in
2. Conflict starts in the heart. The choices we make to get our own way are deliberate. We decide whether to be obedient or disobedient, wise or foolish, caring or unloving.
3. Choices have consequences. For good or bad, the choices we make will affect us and others. Conflict is often the consequence of a choice we have made.
4. Wise-way choices are better than my-way choices. Selfishness is not smart and will not lead to happiness. The wise way is to obey authority, make right choices, seek godly advice and respect others.
5. The blame game makes conflict worse. It doesn't work to point the finger at someone else, cover up one's own bad choices or make excuses.
6. Conflict is an opportunity. By handling it right we get a chance to glorify God, serve others and become better people.
Conflict is not necessarily bad or destructive. Even when conflict is caused by wrong-doing and causes a great deal of stress, it can lead to good. You can use conflict to:
Glorify God (by trusting, obeying, and imitating him)
Serve other people (by helping to bear their burdens or by confronting them in love)
Grow to be like Christ (by confessing wrong and turning from attitudes that promote conflict)
These concepts are totally overlooked in most conflicts because people naturally focus on escaping from the situation or overcoming their opponent
Therefore, it is wise to step back from a conflict and ask yourself whether you are doing all you can to take advantage of these special opportunities.
7. The "Five A's" can resolve conflict. These simple steps will almost always lead to peace.
Children, like adults, can learn to confess their wrongs in a way that demonstrates they are taking full responsibility for their part in a conflict.
Admit what you did wrong. Include both wrong desires and bad choices.
Apologize for how your choice affected the other person. Express the sorrow you feel.
Accept the consequences for your wrongdoing without argument or excuses.
Ask for forgiveness.
Alter your choice in the future. Think over and plan how you are going to act differently next time.
8. Forgiveness is a choice, not a feeling. By forgiving someone, we are making four promises.
False Ideas about Forgiveness
You need to feel like forgiving before you can really forgive. (Wrong. It's a choice you make, not a feeling.)
Forgiveness means forgetting about what someone did to hurt you.
Forgiveness excuses the other person's sin.
Forgiveness depends on getting a guarantee that someone won't do the same wrong thing again.
Four Promises of Forgiveness
I promise I will not dwell on what you did wrong. I will think good thoughts about you and do good for you.
I promise I will not bring up this situation and use it against you.
I promise I will not talk to others about what you did.
I promise I will be friends with you again.
9. It is never too late to start doing what's right. You can always stop doing wrong, then think about a better way and plan how to pursue it.
10. Think before you speak. Or before you act. Or before you confront someone.
11. Respectful communication is more likely to be heard. This includes the words we speak, our tone of voice and our body language (making eye contact and avoiding bad gestures, facial expressions or posture).
12. A respectful appeal can prevent conflict. Learn how to make one.
Stop yourself from choosing to say or do something that will cause conflict.
Think about why you want to appeal and about what words to use.
Appeal (Ask): Using "I" messages and questions, communicate your appeal in a respectful way.
Respond respectfully whether the other person answers yes or no.

Pastors Appreciation Week at Breakthrough

As it’s been announced, October is Pastors Appreciation Month. Simply stated, it’s a time that congregations all over the world take to say THANK YOU to our leaders whom God has appointed to shepherd and watch over our lives.

Here at Breakthrough Church, we have chosen to bless Pastor Jason & Andrea with a week of fun events & activities we’ve entitled “Seven Days of Blessings”. The dates are Sunday, Oct 11 – Saturday, Oct 17. The plan is to have a festive, celebratory potluck breakfast at church on Sunday morning, Oct 11 at 9:30am followed by morning worship service with more blessings. The rest of the week Sunday evening, Oct 11 – Saturday evening, Oct 17 is available to you as the congregation to say thank you to Jason and Andrea on a personal level in any way you and your family choose. Besides shepherding us, Pastor Jason & Andrea both work outside the home and parent three small children. Their plates are very full.

Pray & ask God what you can personally do to bless them. Anything you can think of to help lift a burden, help relieve a stress, I know they would be so very blessed.

They are currently fixing up the house to put it on the market. When the house is sold, they will need help moving-give them an IOU for the move. They like to eat dinner between 5:30-6:30pm. He loves spicy foods, the rest of the family not so much. Pastor Jason is open most days that week for lunch if you’d like to take him out or you can prepare lunch for him or Andrea (Andrea gets a very short time for lunch, so that may be a great idea for her) and drop it off the night before. They eat breakfast around 6:30am in the morning if you choose to take breakfast over you could do it the night before & they can pop it in the oven that morning. Every evening is open for dinner, movies, going over to clean the house, washing & cleaning out their vehicles, filling their vehicles with a tank of gas, the list can go on & on. Listed below are some other ideas I found online.

When you’ve decided what you will do & what day or time of day you want, please let me know. The sooner you do this the better chance you’ll have of getting the time & date you want. When the list is ready, we will pass it on to Pastor Jason & Andrea so that they will know what to expect each day. Sounds like fun to me!!

This is a huge undertaking and one, two, nor three people can get it done. We need your help. First of all, please add this to your prayer list that God would bless and anoint everything that is being planned to bless His son & daughter. We want only His heart in this. Also, we need workers in many areas. Those are listed below.

We will provide more details as they are worked out. For now, pray & allow Holy Spirit to speak to your heart as to how you will participate with Him in blessing this family. God bless you and let me hear from you soon!

Believing Jesus in all things,

Sherry

Workers are needed for:

Setting up & decorating for breakfast

Breaking down & cleaning after breakfast (after morning worship)

More areas of service to be announced

More ideas for giving:

Here are some ideas to show your appreciation for your Pastor:
· Everyone has a favorite homemade dessert. Do you know your Pastor's favorite?
· If your Pastor has children offer to baby-sit. You can give them a FREE voucher to redeem within 24 hours notice.
· Wash the Pastor's car. And if he has a wife then wash her car too. Don't forget to fill the car with gas while you have it.
· Purchase a Gift Certificate for you favorite five star restaurant and leave it in the Pastor's Church Mailbox. It is nice to "take" the Pastor and his wife with you for dinner too but sometimes I think they might like a private romantic dinner. They may not otherwise be able to afford such an extravagant evening. Of course they would appreciate even a McDonald's gift certificate.
· How about taking the Pastor to the clothing store where you get your suits and have him fitted for a brand new suit. Don't forget the shirt, tie, shoes and socks. If you can't afford that then maybe just a new tie might be nice. You might consider giving it as a gift from your Sunday School or Bible Study group.
· You can make a gift basket with a "theme". Maybe Gardening or Bookworm themes. Just put all different and yet related items to the theme in a nice basket.
· Symphony, Theater or Movie tickets would be a nice treat too. Don't forget Sports tickets.
· A home cooked dinner delivered with candles and a nice CD for background music.
· A gift certificate for a professional massage or even a manicure would be nice.
· Gifts don't have to be extravagant or expensive to be special. Handmade items have their own special charm. Just make sure that your gift is from the heart and they will love it no matter what it is.

Let your imagination take over!

The Gender Gap
My wife, Shirley, and I have been blessed with a wonderful relationship. She is my best friend, and I would rather spend an evening with her than with anyone else on earth. But we are also unique individuals and have struggled at times with our differences.
Our most serious conflict has raged now for forty-plus years, with no solution in sight. The problem is that we operate on entirely different internal heating mechanisms. I am very hot-blooded and prefer a Siberian climate. Shirley has ice in her veins and shivers even in warm surroundings. She has concluded that if we can have only one flesh between us, she's going to make it sweat! She will slip over to the thermostat at home and spin the dial to at least eighty-five degrees. All the bacteria in the house jump for joy and begin reproducing like crazy. Within a few minutes I start to glow and begin throwing open doors and windows. This ridiculous tug-of-war has been going on since our honeymoon and will continue till death do us part. In fact, there have been a few times when I thought death would part us over this difficulty!
What is interesting to me is how many other husbands and wives struggle with this problem. It also plagues men and women who fight over the office thermostat. Why is temperature such a pressure point? Because women typically operate at a lower rate of metabolism than men. This is only one of the countless physiological and emotional differences between the sexes that we must understand if we hope to live together in harmony.
Genesis tells us that the Creator made two sexes, not one, and that He designed each gender for a specific purpose. Take a good look at male and female anatomy and it becomes obvious that we were crafted to "fit" together. This is not only true in a sexual context but psychologically as well. Eve, being suited to Adam's particular needs, was given to him as a "help-meet." Man and woman were each divinely fashioned to complement the other.
We're Not Alike
Even a cursory examination of our biological differences can give us a greater appreciation for the unique and wonderful way we are made. Here is a quick rundown of a few:
Men and women differ in every cell of their bodies. This is because each carries a different chromosome pattern that is the basic source of their maleness or femaleness.
Women have greater constitutional vitality, perhaps because of this chromosome difference. Normally, women in the United States outlive men by three or four years.
Men have a higher rate of basal metabolism than women.
The sexes differ in skeletal structure, woman having a shorter head, broader face, less-protruding chin, shorter legs, and longer trunk. The first finger of a woman's hand is usually longer than the third; with men the reverse is true. Men's teeth typically last longer than do those of women.
Women have a larger stomach, kidneys, liver and appendix, and have smaller lungs.
Women have three important physiological functions totally absent in men — menstruation, pregnancy, and lactation. Each of these significantly influences behavior and feelings. Female hormonal patterns are more complex and varied than male. The glands work differently in the two sexes. For example, a woman's thyroid is larger and more active; it enlarges during menstruation and pregnancy, which makes her more prone to goiter, and is associated with the smooth skin, relatively hairless body, and thin layer of subcutaneous fat that are important elements in the concept of personal beauty. Women are also more responsive emotionally, laughing and crying more readily.
Women's blood contains more water (20 percent fewer red cells). Since red cells supply oxygen to the body, she tires more easily and is more prone to faint. Her constitutional viability is therefore strictly a long-range matter. When the working day in British factories under wartime conditions was increased from ten to twelve hours, accidents involving women increased 150 percent; the rate of accidents among men men did not increase significantly.
Men are 50 percent stronger than women in brute strength.
Women's hearts beat more rapidly (eighty vs. seventy-two beats per minute on average); blood pressure (ten points lower than men) varies from minute to minute; but they have less tendency to high blood pressure -- at least when the comparison is to women who have not yet experienced menopause.
Female lung capacity is about 30 percent less than in males.
Women can withstand high temperature better than men because their metabolism slows down less.1
And Even More Differences
In addition to these physiological differences, the sexes are blessed with a vast array of unique emotional characteristics. It is a wise and dedicated husband who desires to understand his wife's psychological needs and then sets out to meet them. Is she a morning person? If not, bring her a cup of coffee to help her start the day. Does she want to talk the moment she opens her eyes? It is unlikely -- but if she feels that way, set aside a few minutes each morning for casual conversation. An observant man can discover countless ways to serve and warm the heart of his wife.
The emotional differences between you and your partner will influence every aspect of your relationship. Briefly stated, in women, love is linked to self-esteem. For a man, romantic experiences with his wife are warm and enjoyable and memorable -- but are not considered necessary. For a woman, they are her lifeblood. Her confidence, her sexual response, and her zest for living are often directly related to those tender moments when she feels deeply loved and appreciated by her man. That is why flowers and candy and cards are more meaningful to her than to him. This is why she is continually trying to pull him away from the television set or the newspaper, and not vice versa. This is why the anniversary is critically important to her and why she never forgets it. That is why he had better not forget it!
This need for romantic love is not some quirk or peculiarity of the wife, as some husbands may think. It is the way God designed the human female, and the sooner men understand this, the better they will be equipped to increase the level of intimacy in their marriages.
Men also need to realize that women tend to care more about the home and everything in it. I don't know whether your wife or fiancee has a nesting instinct, but for years I have observed this feminine interest in the details of the family dwelling. Admittedly, not every woman lives in a neat house. I know some messy ladies whose mothers must have been frightened by garbage trucks when they were pregnant! Yet even these women show a genuine concern for their house and what is in it. Husbands sometimes fail to comprehend the significance of this female inclination.
Shirley and I recognized that we had differing perspectives several years ago when we purchased a gas barbecue unit for use in our backyard. We hired a plumber to install the device and left for the day. When we returned, we both observed that the barbecue was mounted about eight inches too high. Shirley and I stood looking at the appliance, and our reactions were quite different.
I said, "Yes, it's true. The plumber made a mistake. The barbecue is a bit too high. By the way, what's for dinner tonight?"
Shirley reacted more emphatically. "I don't think I can stand that thing sticking up in the air like that!"
I could have lived the rest of my life without ever thinking about the barbecue mounting again, but to Shirley it was a big deal. Why? Because we see the home differently. So we called the plumber and had him lower the unit about eight inches.
Husbands aren't the only ones who need to be aware of their partners' needs, of course. I suggest that wives tune in to their husbands' quirks and interests as well. For example, a survey taken several years ago to determine what men care about most yielded surprising results. Men did not long for expensive furniture, well-equipped garages, or a private study. What they wanted most was tranquility at home. Competition in the workplace today is so fierce, and the stresses of pleasing a boss and surviving professionally are so severe, that the home needs to be a haven to which a man can retreat. It is a smart woman who tries to make her home what her husband needs it to be.
Of course, many women also work, and their husbands are not the only ones in need of tranquility. This is a major problem in two-career families. It is even more difficult in the single-parent situation. I know no simple solution to those stress points, although I'm convinced that emotional instability and even physical illness can occur in the absence of a "safe place." Creating an environment at home to meet that need should be given priority, regardless of the family structure.
Well, so much for this short discourse on gender distinctiveness. I have attempted to show not only that males and females are different -- which any bloke can see -- but also that God authored those differences and we should appreciate them. It is our uniqueness that gives freshness and vitality to a relationship. How boring it would be if the sexes were identical! How redundant it would have been for the Creator to put Adam to sleep and then fashion yet another man from his rib!
No, He brought forth a woman and gave her to Adam. He put greater toughness and aggressiveness in the man, and more softness and nurturance in the woman -- and suited them to one another's needs. And in their relationship, He symbolized the mystical bond between the believer and Christ Himself. What an incredible concept!
I say to you, husbands and wives, celebrate your uniqueness and learn to compromise when male and female individuality collide. Or as an unnamed Frenchman once said, "Vive la difference!" He must have been a happily married man.

Save these dates!

A few events will be taking place soon at Breakthrough Church. Please mark your calendars and begin praying now about how you can be involved. A website is provided after each announcement for your convenience. God bless you richly.

Operation Christmas Child - Breakthrough Church has signed up with the local Operation Christmas Child contact as one of the many participating local churches. Pastor Jason is encouraging us to take part in this ministry to unfortunate children in poverty stricken countries during the upcoming Christmas season. In the next couple weeks, already wrapped Christmas shoe boxes will be made available to you and your family. You will receive instructions and can start packing your box(es) for the girl(s) and/or boy(s) you & your family has decided to bless. You may choose to fill one or twenty boxes - it's up to you. Until then, if you'd like, you can start keeping an eye out for sales or start shopping for items such as pencils, notepads, erasers, small soft toys, small dolls, hair accessories, finger puppets, yo-yo, toothbrushes, wrapped bar soap, tennis balls, etc, etc. A collection Sunday date(bringing your filled boxes to the church for a blessing before shipping out) will be announced. Thank you for so very much your prayerful consideration in blessing a child this Holy season. www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk

Pastor Appreciation Month - October is Pastor Appreciation Month. A week long celebration entitled "Seven Days of Blessings" is being planned to honor Pastor Jason & Andrea and their family. The idea is that we as a church family would each choose a day of the week specified to show our individual appreciation to them. Your family may choose to team up with another family to do this and that is perfectly fine. Some ideas include having them over for a meal, dropping off a meal, taking them out for a meal, blessing them with a love offering, taking them out to the movies, a card with written expressions, gift cards for massages, hair, nails, groceries, gas, clothes, and we all of us know that Pastor Jason is a techie, Andrea loves scrap booking, loves to journal (that might start thoughts flowing) and the list goes on and on. Pray and ask Father how you can bless them. Be creative, be unique. Any expression(s) you choose, I know they will be blessed. The whole idea is to let them know that they are so very much loved and appreciated for all they do and for all they sacrifice for the Kingdom and for how diligently they watch over our lives and daily bathe us in prayer. Mark your calendars for the week of Sunday, October 11 - Saturday, October 17. The kick-off for the "Seven Days of Blessings" will be Sunday, October 11 with a festive breakfast in their honor. More details to follow. Start praying and check out this site for a better idea of all that has been said here. www.pastor-appreciation.net/

ReCharge Worship Retreat - Wednesday, November 11 - Friday, November 13 at the Shrine of St. Therese Jubilee Cabin. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Whether you're a worship leader or not, this promises to a tremendous time of seeking Father, be renewed in our worship & focus and grow in our relationship with Him. Dedicated workers needed

Breakthrough Church is in need of some dedicated committed adults to help out in nursery. You would be responsible for one Sunday a month, usually the same Sunday each month so that it would be easier to remember your time to minister to the children. You would be asked to prepare a lesson, songs, games and snack for the children ages newborn to three years. Some Sundays we may have five or six children and other Sundays, only one but they all need ministry. After church you would be asked to vacuum and pick up the nursery so it would be clean and ready for the next Sunday.

Nursery is a vital ministry as parents need to trust the workers to care for their child so they can relax and allow God to minister to them in the service. Currently, we only have five regulars to do nursery so the children grow to know you and trust you and want to join in the fun you plan for them on your Sunday. Children are already gifted and assigned by God to be our next leaders, pastors, teachers, nurses, mayors and the like.

You get to touch their lives in the early forming stages. If interested in joining our team to minister to the Tiny Tots, please Email Jenny at grammyjenny@gmail.com or call and leave a message at 780-2558 so she can include you on the schedule for September. Thank you for considering this often overlooked ministry of the church.

Swine Flu Update

I’m sure most of you have heard that the H1N1 (Swine) Flu is continuing to spread throughout Juneau, Alaska, the Country and the World. With school starting in a week I wanted to remind you of the steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from the H1N1 Virus and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) if you do come down with flu like symptoms. This information is helpful both with H1N1 and for the “seasonal” flu.

H1N1 Flu Virus
The H1N1 flu virus is causing illness in infected persons in the United states and countries around the world. The CDC expects that illnesses may continue for some time. As a result, you or people around you may become ill. If so, you need to recognize the symptoms and know what to do.

Symptoms—similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu
ü Fever
ü Cough
ü Sore throat
ü Runny or stuffy nose
ü Body aches
ü Headache
ü Chills
ü Fatigue

Avoid contact with others
ü If you are sick, you may be ill for a week or so. You should stay home and keep away from others as much as possible, including avoiding travel and not going to work or school, for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.)
ü If you do leave the house to see medical care, wear a facemask, if available, and cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue.
ü In general, you should avoid contact with other people as much as possible to keep from spreading your illness, especially those at increased risk of severe illness from influenza (pregnant women, elderly & children).

Emergency Warning Signs—if you become ill and experience any of the following warning signs, seek emergency medical care.
In Children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
ü Fast breathing or trouble breathing
ü Bluish or gray skin color
ü Not drinking enough fluids
ü Severe or persistent vomiting
ü Not waking up or not interacting
ü Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
ü Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
ü Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
ü Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
ü Sudden dizziness
ü Confusion
ü Severe or persistent vomiting
ü Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

Lastly, Protect Yourself, Your Family, and Community
ü Stay informed. Health officials will provide additional information as it becomes available. Visit the CDC H1N1 Flue website: www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu
ü Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
ü Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol based cleansers are also effective.
ü Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
ü Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
ü If you are sick with a flu-like illness, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine.) Keep away from others as much as possible. This is to keep from making others sick.
ü If you are sick and sharing a common space with other household members in your home, wear a facemask, if available, to help prevent spreading the virus to others.
ü Learn more about how to take care of someone who is ill in “Taking Care of a Sick Person in Your Home” available at: www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/guidance_homecare.htm
ü Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds, and other social distancing measures.
ü If you don’t have one yet, consider developing a family emergency plan as a precaution. This should include storing a supply of extra food, medicines and other essential supplies. Further information can be found in the “Flu Planning Checklist” available at: www.pandemicflu.gov/plan/individual/checklist.html
